E-102 Gamma is the second of Dr. Eggman's E-100 models and the first playable robot character to appear in the mainstream Sonic the Hedgehog games. Gamma's one and only canon appearance is in Sonic Adventure, his entire life spanning the course of the game's events.

Description[]

E-102's body consisted of a humanoid frame with no neck, his head and torso coming together in an almost ellipsoid shape. His torso was red with a white vertical stripe down the middle and possessed a headlight with a hexagonal grey frame on his left side. He also had grey mufflers surrounding the pelvic area and had the number "102" painted in white on the right of his large vertical stripe and the left side of his rear. His head meanwhile was small and platform-like with a yellow shade and green cylindrical eyes. He also had a Jet Booster hovering behind his head.

Gamma's shoulders were black vertical cylinders and his arms were long and designed with two joints. His upper arms were red, while the parts between his upper arms and forearms were grey. His left arm was red with a yellow cuff, ending in a black hand with three digits. His right arm, however, ended with a laser rifle, his primary weapon. Gamma also possessed two long and inverted legs with five points of articulation and large, black feet with two sharp toes and roller wheels on the heels. The upper sections of its legs in particular were red while the rest of them were grey, except from the calves, which were thick and red.

History[]

E-102 was built within Dr. Eggman's Final Egg base and its frame contained a Flicky bird as an organic battery. Upon activation, Gamma was commanded by Eggman to engage in target practice and then to fight his "big brother" E-101 Beta to earn a place on the Egg Carrier. Gamma succeeded in his trials and was assigned to Eggman's new battleship along with three succeeding E-100 units. Their first mission was to scour Station Square in order to find a mutant frog which had swallowed a Chaos Emerald and played a pivotal role in Eggman's latest scheme.

The E-100 units were dispatched and Gamma found Froggy in Emerald Coast. During the mission, Gamma found himself being transported to another place and time by the spirit of Tikal, and witnessed the echidna girl's first encounter with the creatures known as Chao. Such an encounter should not have mattered to Gamma, but left the robot filled with a sense of confusion.

When Gamma returned to the Egg Carrier in his own time, he delivered Froggy to Dr. Eggman, who then punished the other E-100 robots for their failure by banishing them from his ship. Eggman's careless disregard for his creations would further confound Gamma, who shortly after witnessed the chassis of E-101 being upgraded in the Carrier's workshop.

The confused robot was then ordered by Dr. Eggman to visit the ship's brig to retrieve a Flicky bird that had been locked up along with a girl. The girl - Amy Rose - refused to give the bird up. Gamma was curious as to why Amy would not surrender the bird and did not know why Eggman wanted it to begin with. Confused by Amy's refusal and the bird's recognition of him, Gamma's programming became corrupted by the will of the bird within its body. It decided to release Amy and warned her to get off the Egg Carrier before it reached Eggman's base.

Shortly afterwards, Dr. Eggman commanded Gamma to report to the ship's outer deck to battle Sonic the Hedgehog, who had boarded the vessel to rescue Amy. Gamma fought against Sonic until Amy stepped in, urging them to stop. Soon, the Egg Carrier began to lose altitude and Amy's kindness towards Gamma wiped away the robot's lingering obligation towards Eggman. The robot fled the doomed ship, declaring Dr. Eggman as an enemy and the banished E-100 robots as friends that needed to be "rescued".

One by one, Gamma would track down the other E-100's and destroy them, releasing the animals trapped inside their bodies. His search would eventually lead him back to the downed Egg Carrier where he would battle E-101 Beta once again, who had been rebuilt and was considerably more powerful than before. Despite its new enhancements, Beta was still no match for Gamma and was defeated. Just as Gamma stood over his fallen brother ready to deal the final blow, Beta caught a second wind and blasted Gamma. Both robots had been badly damaged and they both exploded upon the Egg Carrier's deck, releasing the Flicky birds within each of them.

Personality[]

Originally, E-102 Gamma was just another mindless robot in the service of Dr. Eggman, following his master's orders without question. However, over the course of his short "life", a flaw in his programming would cause him to question his actions and the actions of others. During his interactions with Amy Rose, he questioned her refusal to surrender the Flicky in her care, wondering why she would protect something that had no use to her. When Amy asked why he wanted the bird, Gamma responded that he did not have the data available to respond to her query, implying that he didn't know why Eggman wanted the bird. Contact with Amy and the Flicky caused a conflict of logic within Gamma, ultimately leading to the robot releasing them from captivity.

After being damaged in battle against Sonic, Gamma was supported by Amy, who stepped into Sonic's path and begged him to spare the robot. Gamma asked why Amy had helped him and she responded that he was her friend. His programming further corrupted by Amy's influence, Gamma determined that Dr. Eggman was an enemy and that the other E-100 robots were his friends and that they needed "rescuing". After abandoning the Egg Carrier, Gamma resolutely pursued his mission to destroy his fellow robots and free the animals powering them.

Capabilities[]

  • Laser Targeting System - A sensorscope on Gamma's head allows him to tag multiple targets and automatically fire upon them in the order they are tagged.
  • Laser Blaster - Gamma's right arm is equipped with a laser rifle which will automatically target and fire upon tagged enemies. Later on, Gamma replaces this weapon with a modified three-barrel blaster that fires projectiles that explode, making them capable of destroying more than one target per shot.
  • Hover Mode - A fan emerges from inside Gamma's torso that allows him to hover above water and grants him limited flight ability.
  • Jet Booster - A disc-shaped jet engine on Gamma's back allows him to hover and slow his descent.
  • Wheel Mode - To cross terrain quicker, Gamma can kneel down and roll across the landscape on the wheels attached to his heels.

Appearances in other media[]

Archie Comics[]

Main article: E-102 Gamma (Archie)

In the Pre-Super Genesis Wave era of Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog series, Gamma's story began in much the same way as his video game counterpart's. However, he survived his battle with E-101 Mk. II and went on to hunt down Dr. Eggman's other E-Series robots. Years later, Eggman sent E-123 Omega after Gamma. When the two fought, Gamma's body was destroyed, but his "free will" code was uploaded into Omega, who then turned against Eggman and joined forces with G.U.N..

Sonic X[]

Gamma Sonic X

In Sonic X, Gamma was the second robot of the E-100 Series line created by Dr. Eggman in an attempt to harness Chaos' energy to destroy Station Square. Like his video game counterpart, Gamma turned against his master following an encounter with Amy and Lily and began a mission to hack his brothers' systems to make them turn against the doctor too. However, this did not work on Beta, who attacked Gamma. After trying to reason with him, with little success, Gamma clashed with him, fatally damaging them both and "freeing" their animal batteries. As they collapsed and exploded, their hands grasped each other's, as a touching final symbol of their unity. During this event, Amy saw the two being destroyed and cried, as the birds inside of the robots were freed and acknowledged as siblings, echoing the relationship between Gamma and Beta.
