Gigan is a cyborg alien kaiju originating in 1972's Godzilla vs Gigan. While the first films he appeared in were not particularly well-received, Gigan is popular enough to have appeared in several video games, and plays a key role in Godzilla Final Wars.

History[]

Showa era[]

Gigan was a component of the plan the aliens from the Space Hunter Nebula-M had to colonise Earth. Signals the insectoid aliens would transmit meant they could control Gigan and King Ghidorah in order to wipe out humanity. One of the signals was heard by Godzilla and Anguirus who worked out that something was amiss and went to examine the source. The monster allies came face to Gigan and Ghidorah and entered a long and brutal battle. Godzilla and Anguirus were only able to gain the upper hand after the aliens' masters were killed and Gigan chose to abandon Ghidorah. The three-headed dragon followed shortly after.

Gigan later returned to Earth after the Seatopians lost control of Jet Jaguar and sent a distress call to the Space Hunter Nebula-M. Gigan teamed up with Megalon and they took on the restored Jet Jaguar together until Godzilla arrived. The combination of Jet Jaguar and the King of the Monsters was too much for Gigan and Megalon to handle, and Gigan retreated again, leaving Megalon to be defeated at the hands of the pair.

Final Wars[]

Gigan's mummified body is found by the Japan Self-Defence Force, though they are unable to make sense of exactly what they have found, until Mothra's twin fairies, the Shobijin, arrived to inform the assembled humans and mutants that they have come across Gigan and a threat is approaching Earth. When the Xiliens launch their assault upon humanity, one of their earliest acts is to reawaken Gigan. The cyborg is later deployed to Area G when the crew of the Gotengo are left with no option apart from unleashing Godzilla. Gigan tries to reel Godzilla in with his cables, and after a moment's resistance, Godzilla ultimately blasts Gigan's head off with his atomic breath.

As the final showdown begins later in Tokyo, the Xiliens send Gigan in to battle, repaired and equipped with a pair of chainsaws on each arm in place of his usual hooks. Godzilla seems set to have a struggle ahead with both Gigan and the newly arrived Monster X to face, until Mothra enters the fray. Mothra is eventually set ablaze, but her last act is to hurl herself into Gigan in a flaming suicide strike.

Abilities[]

Gigan is one of the most brutal and violent enemies Godzilla has ever had to face. He is equipped with long, lethal hooks in place of hands and these are upgraded to chainsaws in Final Wars. In addition, he can fire a laser from the jewel in his forehead, but his most lethal weapon is the buzzsaw in his chest, which can do serious damage, as proven by Anguirus.
