The Heavy Gunner is a robotic character from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. First introduced in Sonic Mania, he is a member of the Hard Boiled Heavies, a team of Super Badniks created by Dr. Eggman.

Description[]

The Heavy Gunner is a humanoid robot based on the standard Eggrobo Badnik model. Originally, he was a regular Eggrobo, but was physically altered after being exposed to the Phantom Ruby. His current form resembles a police officer, sporting a blue torso adorned with yellow braces across his front as well as a star-shaped badge engraved with the letters 'HBH'. His head resembles a motorcycle helmet; it is white with a transparent visor through which his red eyes can be seen, as well as a red siren light on top. His lower body and arms appear the same as they did pre-transformation, though his feet are blue. He also retains the standard Eggrobo jet-pack on his back that allows him to fly. Finally, the Heavy Gunner carries a rectangular rocket launcher that resembles a large pencil sharpener; it is white with a green barrel.

When the Heavy Gunner transforms into its Phantom Gunner form, it loses its arms and legs, which are replaced by silver cables connecting its body to the large jet-pack/missile launcher apparatus on its back. In this state, it carries multi-missile launchers that fire several projectiles at once.

History[]

Sonic Mania[]

HardBoiledHeaviesPreTransform

After detecting an unknown energy signature emanating from Angel Island, Dr. Eggman dispatched his elite Eggrobo squad, the Hard Boiled Heavies, to investigate the energy source and retrieve it. The Heavies arrived at the floating island and excavated the source of the energy, which was a mysterious gemstone that Eggman would later dub the "Phantom Ruby". As the stone was excavated, Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower arrived on the scene. Just then, the Phantom Ruby reacted, warping time and space around them. The heroes and the robots found themselves all transported to Green Hill and the Heavies had each been transformed into a new and unique state, each one reflecting the personality of the animal trapped inside that robot. However, the transformation process also drove the Heavies insane and they opted to keep the Phantom Ruby for themselves.

While Sonic, Tails and Knuckles pursued the Hard Boiled Heavies, Dr. Eggman also interjected, attacking Sonic and his friends in his Death Egg Robot. Sonic and co. quickly disabled Eggman's mech, but they had caught up with the Heavies and Eggman snatched the Phantom Ruby from them. The doctor immediately began abusing the Ruby's power, warping reality and transporting his enemies to different locations.

Heavy Gunner boss fight 1

When Sonic and his friends made it to Studiopolis Zone, the Heavy Gunner attacked them in a helicopter accompanied by a trio of Eggrobos. However, the heroes were able to defeat their pursuers by striking some of the projectiles launched from the Heavy Gunner's bazooka, sending them hurtling into each Eggrobo and finally striking the Gunner's chopper. While his chopper crashed, the Heavy Gunner was able to escape using his own jet-pack.

When the Hard Boiled Heavies retreated to Dr. Eggman's Titanic Monarch, they were each upgraded thanks to the power of the Phantom Ruby. During Sonic and co.'s battle against the Phantom Egg, Eggman transported them to different chambers during the battle where a different Phantom Heavy would attack them. The Phantom Gunner was equipped with a large missile launcher and fired multiple bombs while maintaining a distance from his target. When the Titanic Monarch was destroyed, the Heavies went down with it.

Sonic Mania Plus[]

Following his adventure with another version of himself, Sonic returned to his world, once again finding himself on Angel Island. There, he encountered his friends Mighty and Ray, who had apparently been captured by Eggman. However, Sonic soon discovered that it was the Heavy Magician who had captured them and had also recovered the wreckage of her fellow Hard Boiled Heavies. Having stolen the Phantom Ruby upon its reappearance, the Heavy Magician used it to revive her brethren.

Restored to life and with the Phantom Ruby in their possession, the Hard Boiled Heavies activated the stone, transporting them as well as Sonic and his friends to Green Hill. From there, it seemed as though the events they had already experienced were repeating themselves as Sonic pursued the Heavies and attempted to stop them and Eggman from abusing the Phantom Ruby's power. Once again, Sonic's friends would confront Dr. Eggman and the Phantom Heavies at the Titanic Monarch, and the Heavies would again be defeated.

Personality[]

The Heavy Gunner is, like most of the Hard Boiled Heavies, an oddball. He is considered a "loose cannon" and is too erratic for his own good. Due to this destructive behaviour, he causes unintentional damage to property and anyone standing in his way. The Heavy Gunner loves to terrorize civilians of Studiopolis Zone with his helicopter. Despite his spontaneous and destructive behaviour however, he still abides to the orders from the Hard Boiled Heavies' leader, the Heavy King, with no hesitation. Like the other Hard Boiled Heavies, he wishes to do harm to Sonic and his friends whether it be by orders from Eggman or by his own chaotic nature.

Capabilities[]

  • Flight - The Heavy Gunner is outfitted with a jet-pack that allows him to fly at will.
  • Rocket Launcher - The Heavy Gunner's primary weapon fires pointed red missiles and blunt blue missiles. While the red missiles will explode as soon as they touch something, the blue projectiles can be struck by an opposing force and be redirected.
  • Phantom Form - The Phantom Gunner flies constantly as it cannot move otherwise, since it has no arms or legs. It can also launch several projectiles at once which will rain down over the battlefield.
