The Penguinator - also called Pen - is a type of Badnik created by Dr. Eggman. Modelled after a penguin, this robot has been designed with arctic combat in mind. It makes its debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Description[]

The Penguinator is a robotic penguin with blue plating covering its head and flippers. It has a gray belly with an orange stripe across it, a needle-shaped beak and white eyes. It shuffles about slowly on its two pointed feet, but when it spots an enemy, it will flop onto its belly and slide across the ice to ram its target.

Game appearances[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles[]

Penguinators appear in the Ice Cap Zone where they can be seen waddling straight forward. When it spots the player, the Penguinator will pick up speed before dropping onto its belly and sliding towards the player. This attack is easily avoided by jumping and the Penguinator can be destroyed with any attack.

Sonic Advance[]

The Penguinator returns in Sonic Advance under the name "Pen". Encountered in the Ice Mountain Zone, it behaves much differently than before. Instead of sliding on its belly to attack, it will fire an icy projectile. When the player draws near, the Pen's torso will open and release a shard of ice that quickly slides across the ground. It can launch these projectiles rather quickly, so it is best to attack by jumping rather than by Spin Dash.

Sonic Advance 2[]

Pen SA2

The Pen appears in the Ice Paradise Zone and has undergone a redesign since its last appearance. This model has no feet and is designed solely to travel across frigid terrain on its belly, using a jet engine in its backside to propel it forward. In gameplay, it can only travel straight forward and is unable to change direction. It can be easily destroyed with any attack.

Sonic Lost World[]

In the Wii U version, PC version and Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World, the Penguinators appear as enemies. During the games' events, the Deadly Six hijacked all of Dr. Eggman's Badniks.

Penguinator-Sonic-Lost-World

In the Wii U/PC version, Penguinators appear either alone or in groups in Frozen Factory Zone 4 and Silent Forest Zone 3. Overall, they use their attack patterns from Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In the 2.5D sections of the Zones, they waddle back and forth, but will attempt to slide into the player when approached. However, some Penguinators will keep repeating their attacks, even when the playable character is not close by. In the 3D pipe sections, the Penguinators initially stand still, but will start belly sliding towards the playable character once they are approached.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, Penguinators appear in Frozen Factory. In the 3D sections, they generally appear as stationary obstacles during the Snowboarding sections or will charge towards Sonic when he is approaching. In the 2.5D sections, they use the same attack pattern from the Wii U/PC version.

Other appearances[]

Sonic the Comic[]

The Penguinator is a third-generation Badnik that serves as part of Dr. Robotnik's Badnik army. In Issue 41, Robotnik had established a facility in the Ice Cap Zone on the Floating Island where he would use spatial portals to deploy Badniks normally stationed on the island to attack different zones across Mobius. He sent multiple waves of Penguinators to attack Hill Top Zone, but his scheme was thwarted by Sonic and Knuckles.

Archie Comics[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Peguinators are models from the Badnik Horde which are employed by the Artika Egg Army in the frozen regions of Artika.
